The Rutgers Lifestyle Science initiative focuses on health, wellness, and disease prevention through incorporating evidence-based practices from around the globe. It is led by Dr. Labros Sidossis of the Department of Kinesiology and Health, Rutgers New Brunswick School of Arts and Sciences and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Rutgers Lifestyle Science focuses on integrative approaches to health and wellness that support a healthy lifestyle. The main focus area is the Mediterranean lifestyle, and the application of integrative approaches to wellness and prevention such as yoga, mind body work for stress reduction, exercise, social interaction, community engagement and behavioral counseling.

The initiative has three branches: education, research and service. The aim is to serve not only the Rutgers community of faculty, staff, student and alumnus, but the state of NJ and nation at large. Rutgers as part of the BIG10, aims to collaborate across other BIG 10 schools through the committee on institutional collaboration to grow the initiative nationwide.

The most important modifiable risk factors for the development of NCDs include physical
inactivity, unhealthy diet, tobacco use, and overconsumption of alcohol.

The Mediterranean lifestyle
pattern

has been recognized

as one of the healthiest diet and lifestyle patterns
(2015 US Dietary Guidelines).
